In March 2009, after completing my deployment in Ethiopia, I found myself in Warsaw once again. This stopover was a moment of transition as I prepared for my next humanitarian mission to Chad. After spending some time at home in Nowy Sącz, it was time to head to Paris to catch my Air France flight to N’Djamena. The day I spent in Warsaw was not only enjoyable but also an opportunity to reflect and mentally prepare for the challenges ahead. A Perfect Day in Warsaw Having visited Warsaw many times before, I knew the city well and could easily choose the places that brought me joy and peace. The capital’s vibrant energy and historical charm provided the ideal backdrop for a day of walking, reflecting, and preparing for the journey ahead. • Strolling Through the Old Town: I wandered through the picturesque Rynek Starego Miasta (Old Town Market Square), with its colourful buildings and lively atmosphere. The quiet beauty of the Royal Castle and the cobblestone streets of the Old Town offered a sense of calm amidst the anticipation of what was to come. • Palace of Culture and Science: As always, this iconic landmark stood as a reminder of Warsaw’s modernity and resilience. The sight of it towering over the city felt symbolic of the strength I would need for the work awaiting me in Chad. • The Vistula River: A leisurely walk along the riverbanks provided a moment of serenity. The view of the city skyline against the flowing waters of the Vistula River was a fitting end to my time in the city. Mental Preparation This day in Warsaw was more than just a layover; it was a necessary pause between two significant chapters in my life. As I walked through the familiar streets, I found myself reflecting on my experiences in Ethiopia and anticipating the challenges and opportunities that Chad would bring. The time to reflect, enjoy good food, and soak in the beauty of Warsaw was exactly what I needed to centre myself before embarking on this new mission. Warsaw, with its mix of history, culture, and energy, always provides a comforting sense of familiarity. This visit was no different, offering the perfect environment to reflect on what I had accomplished and prepare for what lay ahead. As I boarded the train to Paris, I felt both grounded and ready to embrace the next stage of my journey in Chad. This day in Warsaw, though brief, was a reminder of the importance of taking moments to pause and recharge amidst the transitions of life.
