Great visit to the Wind River Range, a dramatic mountain range in central Wyoming that is known worldwide as a spectacular hiking destination. It occupies an area roughly 40 miles by 100 miles, And despite high level smoke making the visibility far less clear than usual, it is still a beautiful set of mountains. The range has more than 2,000 rivers and lakes, many multiday hiking opportunities, and abundant wildlife, including birds, fish, and large mammals like elk, moose, bear, and bighorn sheep. I rode my motorcycle and hiked in two main areas: the Pinedale and Fremont Lake region and the Green River Lakes region. Fremont and Half Moon Lakes were pretty sweet lakes close to Pinedale. But the winner in this area was the Sacred Rim Trail, a short and relatively easy trail that starts at the Elkhart Park Trailhead and leads to a magnificent overlook. The view includes Upper and Lower Long Lakes, located in a sharp and steep glacial valley rising (or plunging, depending on your point of view) a couple of thousand feet, and two mountain sets as a scenic backdrop. Simply Spectacular! Shared the joy (and sacredness) with four other hikers on the way up and back, but had the place to myself for the entire 45 minutes that I was on the rim. A thin and sacred space for me! The Green River Lakes area is famous for its trailheads and its role as the headwater source of the Green River, which eventually joins the Colorado River in Utah. However, this area is perhaps most well known because of its iconic mountains framed by the lake. Squaretop Mountain is easily recognizable, and its partner mountain across the lake, are poster-ready. On the day I was there, the air was still quite hazy and smoky, so the dramatic layers of mountains were not so obvious. However, they were still visible, if barely. After soaking up that view and a lakeshore hike, I headed downstream to an inviting spot for paddling some whitewater rapids in the Upper Green River. Fun to get in a whitewater boat again, and really fun to see a small waterfall right at the start of the six mile run. It followed a delightful meandering course, and the landscape visuals were dominated by early fall color. Nice!
