High Point State Park is located at the most northern part of New Jersey, and on the highest (in elevation) point of the state. On the very highest hill in the park is a 220 foot tall obelisk honoring New Jersey veterans. The Park and the monument are popular local attractions, and the place was very busy on the Sunday afternoon that I visited there. However, when you get off the roads and onto the hiking trails, things get much less crowded. I hiked about a mile of the Appalachian Trail to get to the monument, and I found the trail quite beautiful and interesting. And hardly any people, until I got to the monument. They all drove up and missed the best part of the park: the trails!
The views at the top are nice: pretty much a 360° panorama. However, there are not many really distinctive features visible except for the Delaware River, so that reduces the "Wow" factor a bit. Getting to the top was, for me, even nicer. Scenery rating 4.25 for exposed geology, interesting hiking terrain, attractive destination, and culturally significant destination. Detractions included crowds, litter, and somewhat indistinct visual features at the top.
