After my wonderful stay in Thuringia, my journey continued to Berlin, where I spent a few days visiting my dear friends and Oxfam colleagues, Nicki and Thomas. Seeing them in their Berlin home, away from the work environment, was a special experience. It gave us the opportunity to relax, enjoy each other’s company, and share new memories in one of Europe’s most vibrant cities.
Exploring Berlin
Berlin, especially in the summer, exudes an energy and charm that is truly captivating. During my visit, we took the time to explore the city’s many landmarks, each a testament to its layered history and dynamic spirit:
• The Brandenburg Gate: Standing as a symbol of unity and peace, this iconic structure was as breathtaking as I’d imagined.
• The Berlin Wall Memorial: A sobering reminder of the city’s divided past, the remnants of the wall offered profound insights into Berlin’s resilience and transformation.
• The Reichstag Building: We visited this historic seat of German government, and the glass dome provided stunning views of the city.
• Museum Island: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this cluster of museums offered a treasure trove of art and history, blending seamlessly into the modern cityscape.
• Checkpoint Charlie: A poignant symbol of the Cold War, it was fascinating to see this historic site up close.
Beyond the famous landmarks, Nicki and Thomas introduced me to Berlin’s culinary delights. From sampling international cuisine to indulging in local favourites like currywurst and pretzels, the food added another layer of enjoyment to my visit. Exploring hidden cafes and local eateries, we truly embraced the relaxed and diverse vibe of the city.
A Favourite Capital
Berlin’s blend of history, culture, and modernity instantly made it one of my favourite capital cities in Europe. The way the city honours its past while embracing innovation and creativity is remarkable. Whether it was walking through its leafy parks, admiring its eclectic architecture, or enjoying lively conversations with Nicki and Thomas, every moment felt special.
Return to Poland
After my time in Germany, exploring both Thuringia and Berlin, I drove back to Nowy SÄ…cz to continue my summer holiday in Poland. The journey left me with cherished memories of reconnecting with friends, discovering new places, and experiencing the richness of German culture.
The summer of 2009 was not just about travel; it was about the connections I deepened and the experiences I shared. Spending time with Nicki and Thomas in Berlin reminded me of the importance of friendships built through work and how they extend into life beyond the field. Berlin itself, with its vibrant energy and fascinating history, became a place I know I will always enjoy returning to.
