COHEN EASTERN GREENWICH CIVIC CENTER - (Dan Edelstein reporting)
There are a total of 4 Pickleball courts on two tennis courts. As a guide, the # 2 courts are to the east (ie, farther from the building) and #1 courts are closer to the building. The A courts are north, closer to the field, the B courts are south, closer to the railroad tracks. Generally, the surfaces of all the courts have a variety of cracks and dead spots.
They did some patches in mid '23. Those patches deteriorated pretty quickly, so are currently the worst spots on the courts. When they repainted the lines on those spots, they never completely connected the new lines to the old, so left gaps of 2-3 inches making line calls difficult when balls land in those areas.) There are several pics documenting that. Court 2A clearly has the worst surface of the four; lots of dead spots, especially on the south side and a ridge runs vertically through both sides of the court. The three other courts are not as bad as 2A, but each have their own challenging areas.
NETS - There are two "professional" nets which are in pretty good shape. The other 2 nets, graciously donated by Bill Herz, are in need of repair.
LIGHTING: The lighting is uneven. There is a bank of lights above Court 1A that is out, at least intermittently, so the north side of that court is almost in the dark. When you're playing on the south side of 2B, the lights often shine directly into your eyes. The lights illuminate the other courts pretty well.
EQUIPMENT: Worn out. We need new rollers and squeegees. The TeamReach group takes good care of the courts. Notable: one of our regulars (Rich Consiglio) took it upon himself to make that paddle rack (Pic 301, 312) and, hot off the presses, has made another one for the opposite side of the courts. Thanks Rich!
The group never uses metal shovels to deal with snow, only plastic, and we bring our own towels to get the courts playable sooner than the elements might otherwise allow. We provide as much TLC to the courts as possible, but as is documented above, they are getting quite run down.
