In the summer of 2013, fresh from my inspiring time in Lisbon, I took a flight to Toronto, embarking on a meaningful trip to Canada. The primary purpose was to celebrate the wedding of my two dear friends, Paula and Ruth, whom I consider almost like sisters. I had met them during my Nairobi deployment with Action Against Hunger, and their bond had become a cherished part of my life. Their wedding was set in the stunning Parry Sound, on the shores of one of Ontario’s majestic lakes. It was an occasion filled with love, laughter, and incredible natural beauty. Exploring Toronto Before heading to Parry Sound, I spent a few days in Toronto, soaking in the energy and diversity of Canada’s largest city. Highlights of Toronto: 1. The CN Tower: • Dominating the Toronto skyline, this iconic tower offered spectacular views of the city and Lake Ontario. The glass floor at the observation deck was a thrilling experience! 2. St. Lawrence Market: • Exploring this historic market was a sensory delight, with its bustling vendors, local delicacies, and vibrant atmosphere. 3. Distillery District: • This pedestrian-only neighbourhood, with its cobblestone streets and preserved Victorian-era industrial buildings, was a perfect mix of history, culture, and modern charm. A Trip to Niagara on the Lake and Niagara Falls As part of the wedding preparations, I joined friends on a side trip to Niagara on the Lake and Niagara Falls. 1. Niagara on the Lake: • This charming town, nestled in the heart of Ontario’s wine country, was a serene escape. With its picturesque streets, boutique shops, and lush vineyards, it was the perfect prelude to the grandeur of the falls. 2. Niagara Falls: • The sheer power and majesty of the Horseshoe Falls left me awestruck. Taking a boat ride close to the roaring water was an exhilarating experience that brought us face-to-face with nature’s might. The Wedding at Parry Sound The highlight of the trip was, of course, the wedding of Paula and Ruth at Parry Sound. • Scenic Beauty: • The ceremony took place against the breathtaking backdrop of one of Ontario’s lakes, surrounded by lush greenery and the peaceful sounds of nature. • A Joyful Celebration: • The wedding was a true celebration of love and friendship, bringing together a wonderful mix of familiar faces and new acquaintances. • We rejoiced in the union of two amazing people and spent hours enjoying the company, heartfelt speeches, and vibrant music. • Friendship and Connection: • The setting, the laughter, and the shared moments of joy reinforced the deep bonds of friendship that I share with Paula, Ruth, and many of the guests who were present. This trip to Canada was a memorable blend of exploration and celebration. From the urban excitement of Toronto to the natural wonder of Niagara Falls and the heartfelt joy of the wedding at Parry Sound, every moment felt special. Celebrating Paula and Ruth’s love in such a beautiful setting, surrounded by friends old and new, was an uplifting experience. It reminded me of the importance of cherishing relationships and making time to celebrate life’s milestones. This journey holds a special place in my heart, not only for its beauty and joy but for the connections and love that made it truly unforgettable.
