On June 8 and 9, 2023, Prey Veng Documentation Center organized two weekend classroom forums with 51 students from Boeung Preah High School (41 females and 10 males). The forum focused on the topic of "Foreign Relations of Democratic Kampuchea". At the beginning of the forum, all students discussed their questions about the history of Democratic Kampuchea with teacher Pheng Pong Rasy, who spent more than an hour in this section. At the end of the Q&A session on the content of history, the lecturer gave a presentation on Chapter 11: "Foreign Relations" of the History textbook of Democratic Kampuchea, which lasted almost an hour. The content of the lesson is summarized as follows: During the Khmer Rouge era, Cambodia had friendly relations with China, North Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Romania, Yugoslavia, Albania and Egypt. During DK, their diplomats, except the Chinese, were confined to their embassies. In 1978, Democratic Kampuchea expanded its foreign relations with other countries such as Thailand, Japan, Singapore, Madagascar, South Korea, Hong Kong, Bangladesh and China to expand agricultural and industrial exports, and the Khmer Rouge imported Weapons, tanks and agricultural machinery. In addition, China helped repair the railway from Phnom Penh to Kampong Som and helped build the Kampong Chhnang airport. Through this chapter, China also recommended that the Khmer Rouge negotiate and make a ceasefire with Vietnam as the Khmer Rouge offered to assist in the fight against Vietnam. Democratic Kampuchea rejected this proposal and went to war with Vietnam. In January 1978, the Khmer Rouge lost the war and lost control of the country to this day. To assist in the study of this lesson, the trainers have shown a short video entitled "Chinese Relations and the Pol Pot Regime of the Khmer Rouge" which is publicly posted on YouTube. The end of the weekend classroom forum is to measure students' knowledge of today's lesson. Two questions were asked to some students. Photo and Report by: Thon Sreypich & Phea Raksmey
