Clyde, Eichorn and Michael Minarets. This would be the biggest undertaking of the trip, with limited bail opportunities aside from rappelling Amphitheater Chute, reversing the route, or dropping down via the west side and making a roundabout exit via either South Notch or North Notch. Two of the minarets have legendary namesakes (Norman Clyde and Jules Eichorn) and one was the subject of perhaps the most famous search in Sierra history (the search for Pete Starr, Jr.). Now, owing to Matthew Greene's disappearance in the same region, Henry, Clark, and I were engaged in a similar search. Though we read some intimidating route descriptions beforehand that had us all a bit apprehensive, the day turned out to be a largely class 2 and 3 affair with a few spots of class 4 on good rock (albeit cluttered with debris) with plenty of good holds and some sections with a fair bit of exposure. Indeed, it was the sort of terrain that some jokingly describe as "class 3 with a class 5 feel" that can create some of the most enjoyable scrambling. Before we left camp, we looked up to Clyde and the rest of the Minarets to see them shrouded in fog. This lead to some discussion as to what we'd do if the fog continued, but for the time being we shelved the thought and headed out.
