WEEKEND CLASSROOM FORUM FOR YOUTH ON A HISTORY OF DEMOCRATIC KAMPUCHEA (1975-1979) Location: DCCAM'S TAKEO DOCUMENTATION CENTER Participants: LEAY BO HIGH SCHOOL when: AUGUST 20, 2022 Photos: Sieng Kanha (contract staff), Rim Sreysros (volunteer), Moeun Hach (volunteer) Presenter: Pheng Pong-Rasy A 94th weekend classroom forum was held in DC-CAM’s Takeo Documentation Center on August 20, 2022. The Forum started at 8 a.m. and ended at 11:30 on the same day. 31 youths (18 females) and 3 history teachers (1 female) attended this Forum. While the youths entered the Center’s gate, they went to see all photo panels exhibited at both sides of the Center. To assist them to understand more about the exhibition, Kanha, a project staff, got them read the photo’s captions and explained more detail about the photos. Next, the youths went to inside the Center to see more photos, KR documents stored at 59 cabinets, and the Center’s daily works. Then the youths and their leaders were invited to sit on the chairs and sofa arranged at upstairs of the Center, where a Classroom has been set for a history class. The participants were then asked to complete a pre-test of a history context and genocide prevention processes for 10 minutes. Next session went to a short presentation of genocide prevention strategies, definitions of mass atrocity crimes, and specific factors which were led to create violence and genocide. The participants showed their interested in learning this session through their listening to, taking notes, asking questions, and discussing around the topics. To be continued, a presentation of a History of Democratic Kampuchea was started with all participants after they took a small break. This session took more than 60 minutes, including a film screening of a short documentary film – Children of Cambodia. Many students asked questions to fulfill their knowledge about the DK history. At the end of the Forum, the participants were asked to complete post-test. This was to measure their knowledge after attending the Forum. Then each participants received a copy of “A History of Democratic Kampuchea (1975-1979)” textbook, and they were suggested to read and keep this.
