The Hartland Covered Bridge was constructed in 1901 to cross the Saint John River and measures an astounding 1,282 feet. This one-lane bridge was built out of cedar spruce and hard pine and local businessmen helped with its construction at a cost of a mere $30,000. It was officially opened in July, 1901 with a toll of three cents for pedestrians and six cents for a single horse and wagon.
The Saint John River flows into town where it flows through a dam and falls over a wide span of rocks to continue through a 230 foot deep gorge that cuts right through the center of town for more than a mile. It’s no Niagara but scenic.
