The Shiikellamy State Park, in Northumberland, near Sunbury, is a 130 acre park that celebrates the confluence of the West Branch and the North Branch of the Susquehanna River. It has two sites, one an overlook about 350 feet above the West Branch; the other, called the marina, on the south end of Packers Island, an island that juts into the two river currents. It includes a big picnic area, a marina, a boat launch, hiking trails, and a butterfly garden as well as the park office. You can see each site from the other one. The hiking trails are modest; the confluence of the rivers is the thing here. And the views. It's a beautiful spot, imo. The park is named in honor of Chief Shikellamy, and Iroquois chief who played a prominent role in the early European settlement of this part of Pennsylvania. His tribal home was near the overlook. I could find no information or tributes about him or his tribe at the park, or even on the park website, for that matter. The park office was closed at the time of my visit. Perhaps they have something there? Room for improvement, imo. No camping, a few interesting little hikes on the overlook, and the marina section looks and feels a bit like a manicured city park. Not what I typically think of as a state park, but an interesting addition to the collection of parks. It appeared well used and busy on the beautiful summer afternoon when I was there. Quite nice.
The Overlook. The island in the first two pics is Packers Island, where the marina section of the park is.
