In 2019, the expansion of the previous two-lane Outer Ring Road #121 began. Many sections, mainly eastern sections of the Outer Ring Road, have begun upgrading to a four-lane road. In addition, the conversion of two existing same-level crossings has started. A small but busy crossing with a provincial road that runs through the village of Ban Tha Ruea has been converted by an overpass for the Outer Ring Road over the provincial road. A much more complex conversion was carried out at the existing same-level crossing of Highway #118 (Ching Mai - Doi Saket - Chiang Rai), which was previously secured with traffic lights. Several bridge structures and a roundabout-like road connection were built to replace the same-level crossing. The entire structurally modified area covered a large area and after completion in 2021, the structure as a whole can only be seen from a bird's eye view. In 2022, the Outer Ring Road was finally completed with four lanes along its entire length, but the locations of the power poles running at a great distance on both sides of the road margin clearly indicate that the Outer Ring Road is later intended for a six-lane widening, and that there are also plans to replace the remaining same-level intersections, up to now secured with traffic lights, with overpasses and underpasses.
Photos of the new structural situation at each of the two intersections mentioned will shortly (in 2022) be shown in two new photo albums.
One of the most important intersections for bicyclists and motorcyclists when traveling from Baan Sammi to Chiang Mai, or in opposite direction, is the intersection at Ban Nam Phrae (point 3) on Chiang Mai – Doi Saket Road #118. In early 2019, this intersection was much improved by the construction of an underpass especially for cyclists and motorcyclists. The current album, and even the current Google Map (Dec. 2019), still show the old situation, but new photos in 2022 will be shown in a new album.
