During my fall internship at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg, I took the opportunity to visit Berlin for the first time. Night train up via Probstzella, Leipzig, Berlin Zoo. Then, walk around to find some food before getting on the S-Bahn to the Bahnhof Friedrichsstrasse (aka Tränenpalast). From there I walked to the Brandenburg Gate, up Unter den Linden, all the way to Alexanderplatz visiting sites like the Neue Wache, Dom, Pergamon Museum, and up the tower. Then back again, making sure to spend the money I had to exchange. Then back to the West again. Pictures of that walk were all taken in color and are at bottom of this album. Then, walked across the Tiergarten... to the other side of the Wall by the Reichstag, and along the wall all the way to Checkpoint Charlie where I caught a cab or something to get back to Bahnhof Zoo and my night train back to Nuremberg. One VERY long and full day, almost all of it spend in the East, the historical core of the city. These pictures document the walk along the wall until it got to be too dark. My next visit was right after New Years 1989-90, after the wall had just opened, when my father and siblings hammered away at it for our own fragments, walked through the Brandenburg Gate, and again explored mostly the East. It was a very different experience, but seemed familiar. Those pictures are at the very bottom.
