One of Chile's most scenic regions lies in its far north on the border with Peru and Bolivia. I visited it several times from 1980-2015. This album contains images of the city of Arica, the Azapa Valley (with its geoglyphs and a museum with the world's oldest artificially preserved mummies), and Lauca National Park. Most of the images of volcanoes were taken in 1983 during an expedition supported by the Chilean National Forestry Corporation (CONAF). Unfortunately, my climbing companion, Rob Blatherwick, fractured a bone in his foot and thus some of the volcanoes were ascended alone. A few small volcanoes have been included here due to their having played roles in traditional beliefs.
