Andros is beautiful and the most northern of the Cycladic Islands and easily reached by ferry from Rafina the port to the east of Athens. A two-hour journey brings you to the port Gavrio on the south. Andros's history goes back to the Neolithic period (4500 - 3200BC) and maybe even before that. It is mountainous and very green and has wonderful natural spring water and much to commend it. Hiking, trekking is popular and very well organised here. There are many good beaches and some are Blue Flag Beaches; Batsi, Andros Chora and Khorsi are the bigger towns. Archaeology and heritage, olive growing, bee keeping, fishing are all here and the visitor will have a fascinating time exploring the capital Chora with its pretty Venetian legacy of architecture, the Archaelogical Museum, the Museum of Modern Art all gifted by the Goulandris Foundation plus the Naval Museum and the Museum of folklore and Christian Art. The countryside is dotted with ancient pigeon lofts! There is some wonderful cuisine and fish and vegetables and fruit in their timeless Greek way make for a wonderful choice. There are small hotels in Andros Chora and around the island and apartments and small hotels in Batsi. The mountain villages are interesting too and I particularly recommend the Olive Oil Museum at Pitrifos and the natural springs at Menites. The Athens International Airport has regular buses to the port of Rafina to connect with the ferries. Car hire is I consider essential.
