China generally, Shanghai especially, is a rapidly changing and developing city. However, with development comes a preservation of tradition. During the period of the French Concession, one of those unique traditions was Shikumen (石库门) architecture, a combination of Western and Chinese architecture styles. In an effort to save this neighborhood, the city government turned it into a boutique arts and shopping district. Even with the modern, expensive clothing and pizza, the tight streets and narrow alleyways help it retain a old world feel.
