A fabulous 22 island archipelago (island chain) juts out into Lake Superior on the Bayfield Peninsula, about 70 miles east of Duluth, MN. All but one of the islands are part of the National Lakeshore; most can be visited by boat, and about two thirds of them offer hiking and remote camping. There is a 12 mile narrow shoreline on the mainland as well, but most of the action is on the islands and the water.
