To propagate bamboo, one method is bamboo plant division. This method works on bamboo species with pachymorph as well as leptomorph rhizomes. For tall and giant bamboo with thick culms and strong pachymorph rhizomes, this method is time-consuming; it requires a lot of work and the right tools.
Bamboo plant division means that a part with rhizomes is separated from an existing living bamboo stand (or bamboo clump, if the rhizome is pachymorph), dug up, and replanted. This separated part can consist of one or more culms, the culms can have branches and leaves. Since digging up a plant cuts a large part of the root system and the remaining roots can no longer adequately support the plant, culms and branches usually have to be trimmed and most or all of the foliage removed, either before the plant is excavated, or immediately afterward.
