After wrapping up the seminar in Brussels, I boarded a direct Delta flight to Atlanta to spend a week with my dear friend Christine, who had settled there while working for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Christine and I first met years ago in Khartoum, where she worked as a doctor with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). Her kindness and friendship have always been remarkable, and this visit only deepened my appreciation for her. A Warm Welcome in Atlanta From the moment I arrived, Christine ensured my stay was extraordinary, spoiling me with her hospitality and planning a perfect mix of relaxation and exploration. Exploring Atlanta 1. City Highlights: • Atlanta’s energy is infectious, with a vibrant mix of modernity and deep historical significance. • A visit to the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site was a moving experience, as it showcased the city’s vital role in the Civil Rights Movement. Walking through King’s birth home and the Ebenezer Baptist Church left a lasting impression. 2. The Georgia Aquarium: • One of the standout experiences in Atlanta was the visit to the Georgia Aquarium, one of the largest in the world. • Watching the whale sharks, beluga whales, and other marine life in their enormous tanks was awe-inspiring. The dolphin show, with its captivating performances, was also a highlight, offering a reminder of the wonders of the natural world. 3. Christine’s Friends and Colleagues: • Christine introduced me to her incredible friends and colleagues from the CDC. Their dedication to public health and their warm welcome made my visit even more meaningful. A Trip to Savannah and Tybee Island Christine and I took a two-day trip to Savannah and Tybee Island, which turned out to be a magical extension of my visit. Savannah: A Step Back in Time 1. Historic District: • Walking through Savannah’s Historic District was like stepping into a different era. The cobblestone streets, shaded by oak trees draped in Spanish moss, created a serene and timeless atmosphere. • The Forsyth Park Fountain was a highlight, a beautifully preserved landmark that perfectly captured the city’s charm. 2. Polish Connection: Tadeusz Kościuszko • As a Pole, I was thrilled to learn about Tadeusz Kościuszko’s connection to Savannah. The celebrated Polish general played a crucial role in America’s fight for independence, and his contributions to fortifying Savannah during the Revolutionary War were instrumental. • Seeing tributes to Kościuszko reminded me of the historical bonds between Poland and the United States, which continue to inspire admiration. 3. Rich History and Architecture: • Savannah’s blend of colonial, Georgian, and Victorian architecture added depth to the city’s appeal. Touring historic homes and learning about their significance was a fascinating experience. Tybee Island: Coastal Bliss 1. Relaxing by the Ocean: • Tybee Island offered a beautiful contrast to Savannah’s historical depth. The island’s tranquil beaches and laid-back vibe provided the perfect setting to unwind. • We explored the Tybee Island Light Station and Museum, which offered breathtaking views and a glimpse into the island’s maritime past. 2. Nature and Serenity: • The fresh ocean breeze, the sound of waves, and the picturesque sunsets made Tybee Island an unforgettable escape from the hustle and bustle. The week with Christine flew by all too quickly. From exploring Atlanta’s vibrant city life to delving into the rich history of Savannah and enjoying the serene beauty of Tybee Island, every moment was filled with connection, discovery, and gratitude. Christine’s warmth and generosity made this trip special, and her introduction to her world of friends and colleagues added a layer of richness to the experience. Learning about Kościuszko’s contributions in Savannah was a particularly meaningful moment, a reminder of the enduring connections between my homeland of Poland and the United States. Returning to Brussels and eventually Juba, I carried with me the joy of this incredible journey and the cherished memories of time spent with an extraordinary friend in a remarkable part of the world.
