The Georgia Asian Pacific American Bar Association (GAPABA) hosted its signature Annual Gala on Thursday, September 15, 2022, at the Georgia Aquarium. The sold-out event featured Tony West, Senior Vice President, Chief Legal Officer & Corporate Secretary of Uber, who received the 2022 General Counsel Diversity Champion Award. The event was co-emceed by Richard Lui, MSNBC | NBC News Anchor, Journalist, and Author, and Amara Sohn Walker, CNN Anchor & Correspondent. President Timothy Wang, Associate General Counsel, Delta Air Lines, delivered warm welcoming remarks, together with the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) President, Rear Admiral A.B. Cruz, III. Other Honorees for the evening included: • Michael C. Wu, GAPABA Board Member, Chief Legal Officer & Corporate Secretary, Bath & Body Works, who received the GAPABA 2022 Outstanding Leadership Award, who was introduced by Timothy Wang, GAPABA President. • Hannah Kim, Executive Vice President, Chief Legal & Compliance Officer & Corporate Secretary, Neiman Marcus Group, who received the 2022 Women’s Leadership Award, and was introduced by Angela Hsu, GAPABA Board Member & Past President. • Hemanth Digumarthi (Posthumous), GAPABA Past President, GAPABA Law Foundation (GLF) Board Member, Associate, Cruz & Associates, who received GAPABA's highest honor, the Judge Alvin T. Wong Pioneer Award. Judge Wong, State Court of DeKalb County, and Kasey Chow GLF Board Member, presented the posthumous award to Hemanth Digumarthi, which was accepted by Samantha Harrykissoon. • Amy B. Cheng, Atlanta Bar-Association President-Elect, Senior Associate, Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough, was selected for the 2022 GAPABA Rising Star Award and introduced by Ling-Ling Nie, GAPABA Board Member. • Katherine Hsu, Law Student, Northwestern University School of Law, received the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) Law Foundation Han C. Choi Scholarship Award, which was presented by The Choi Abrams Family & Judy Kim, NAPABA Law Foundation. Judge Chong J. Kim, Chair of the GAPABA Law Foundation, recognized 2021 grant recipients, including many notable community service organizations, and Byung J. “BJay” Pak, Executive Committee Member, AAPI Crime Victims & Education Fund, presented updates on the first of its kind national fund for victims of anti-Asian hate and violence. More than five hundred guests from the legal community throughout the U.S. attended the Southeast’s premier networking event. GAPABA hosted nearly fifty general counsel from companies across the United States, as well as three dozen judges and elected officials. A portion of the funds raised will benefit the GAPABA Law Foundation, a 501(c)(3) affiliate of GAPABA that provides grants to non-profit organizations providing charitable and educational services for Georgia’s APA community.
